This is what I found on my blog — visually lovely and cheering in addition. I am very grateful to know that these pages are being read in Japan, a country where intelligent awareness of jazz is far higher than at home. I salute you!

Two particularly endearing compact discs have arrived, and I haven’t stopped playing them. They’re on the Swedish Kenneth label, the jazz-child of the jazz scholar and producer Gosta Hagglof, who also happens to be one of the world’s most fervent Louis Armstrong fans and specialists. (His site, “Classic Jazz Productions,” is on the blogroll to the right.) )

For forty years now, Gosta has been producing records and CDs of heartwarming jazz, featuring Maxine Sullivan, Benny Waters, Kenny Davern, Doc Cheatham, and others, alongside Swedish jazz stars, including the quite spectacular cornetist-trumpeter Bent Persson, reedman Claes Brodda, and others. These sessions have an inimitable looseness, somewhere between live performances (think of the St. Regis jam sessions without Alistair Cooke) or the slightly more formal Teddy Wilson Brunswicks, lyrical and propulsive. Here’sa much younger Gosta greeting Louis at the airport in 1965: the warm feeling passing back and forth is immediately evident.

Now, Gosta has issued Dick Cary: The Wonderful World of Hoagy Carmichael (Kenneth CKS 3410), and A Tribute to Billie Holiday: Doc Cheatham and his Swedish Jazz All Stars featuring Henri Chaix (CKS 3407). You might initially think that there have already been more than enough tributes to Hoagy and Billie, but these discs are stirringly good.

Große Musik überschreitet alle geographischen Grenzen und alle Sprachen!

  2. Now the secret is out: I write these postings primarily for the pleasure of Mr. Jones’s comments. Mr. Jones should have his own blog, but I don’t need the competition from someone so wisely hilarious. And I even understand the last sentence . . .

    Gracias a Usted, Michael

  3. Just shows you what online translation-generators can do. To test the efficacy of these translators, I entered some well-known song lyrics and translated them into German, then re-translated the German back into English. While the results may not capture all the idiomatic nuances of the originals, I think you’ll agree they represent a significant improvement. For example:

    When I was a young man who woos the girls,
    I played myself delaying tactics;
    If a girl me ripples herself with throwing rejected,
    I would let the old earth a few Whirls make,
    While I exercised her with breaks in place of the beads,
    And during time around came, it my method came,
    While time came around, it came…

    Oh, is long it a long while from May to December,
    But the days grow briefly, if you achieve September;
    If the autumn weather turns the pages to the flame,
    One did not receive time for delaying tactics.
    Oh, shrink the days down to precious few,
    From September, November,
    And I spend these few precious days with you,
    These precious days, which I spend with you!

    I especially like the plain-spoken matter-of-factness of “delaying tactics,” don’t you? The next time a girl “me ripples with throwing rejected,” I’ll know what to do.

    Here’s another:

    Oh, my honey! Oh, my honey!
    Improve hurry and let you us snake!
    Aren’t you going? Aren’t you going?
    To the FührerMan jagged meter man?
    Oh, my honey! Oh, my honey!
    Let me you Alexanders of the great status brass band take
    Don’t you come along?

    Concern and to hear you! Concern and to hear you! Alexanders rag time tape!
    Concern and to hear you! Concern and to hear you! It is the best tape in the country!
    They can play a horn call like you heard never beforehand,
    So naturally that you would like to go into the war;
    That is even bestest tape, which in the morning, oh, my honey lamb!
    Along concerned! Along concerned! Let me you by the hand take
    Up to the man the merry man, who is the leader of the tape,
    And if you liked to hear the Swanee River, who is played in the rag time,
    To concern and hear! Concern and to hear you
    Alexanders rag time tape!

    Gotta love that FührerMan!

  4. I have a project in the San Francisco bay area that fuses traditional Japanese melodies with contemporary jazz. The project is called Neiro. http://www.myspace.com/neiroproject

    I think you’ll like.
