A ROYAL CAT, SHE DIGS THE GROOVES

I caught Minnie analyzing the alternate takes of “Exercise in Swing” (Lester Young and Johnny Guarneri, Savoy, 1944), comparing the solos.  Listening is serious business if you’re a Siamese cat:

  1. My cat Starry isn’t nearly as sophisticated as Minnie. We were driving her back from NJ the other evening while playing a ’50s childrens CD (IT COULD BE A WONDERFUL WORLD sung by the then-young Ronnie Gilbert and Leon Bibb) which we’d just acquired (for nostalgia purposes) from a vintage record dealer. The CD was playing a song about Old Commodore Gray’s dog (with a big bow-wow) and his cat (with a little meow) –when we heard her caterwauling her accompaniment to the recording. The only problem was that we’d just a few minutes earlier been relieved to realize that she’d finally stopped complaining ferociously about her confinement in her cage.

  2. This cat has great taste!
