I’ve just returned from the nineteenth Whitley Bay International Jazz Festival, which was delightful. I didn’t take as many still pictures as I should have, perhaps because I had my video camera glued to my eye . . . the results will, I hope, emerge soon. But here are some portraits from the three days of elation and emotion:

Pingback: PORTRAITS: WHITLEY BAY, 2009
Good to see pictures on there of my buddies Bob & John, both of whom will, I hope, be joining us tomorrow night to help celebrate my dad’s 84th birthday?
Good to see Mike McQuaid there representing Australia!
I have to ask, where did Nick Ward and Cousin John get those awesome jazz label t-shirts? I want one!
Ah, Trevor, I think you have to come to the States. The grey shirt Cousin John is wearing comes from Phil Pospychala’s Bix tribute; I don’t know about Nick Ward’s very delightful reproduction of the Whiteman potato-head label in classic black . . . check out Albert Haim’s Bix site (on my blogroll) and someone there will be glad to tell you.
Hi there from Burlington, Ontario, Canada,
I too attended the Whitely Bay Jazz Festival (my first time) and was utterly enthralled by all the artists; especially the Hot Five Reed Warmers.
You neglected to mention our own Janet Shaw on clarinet on stage with Stefan and Auriele in your Jazz Lives.
Janet plays a mean sax as well!
Loved the event!
Thanks for pointing her out! I’ll add her name to the list of honorable reedwarmers onstage. I always rely on my readers to tell me things I didn’t know. Glad you enjoyed Whitley Bay: I will be posting more clips from it on an irregular basis. Cheers! Michael
I was there as well and had a wonderful time. Met great people and listened to the best jazz in the world. I was very proud that Toronto’s band ,The Hot Five Jazzmakers, filled the room every time they performed. Five amazing muscian’s and, of course, the very versatile
Janet Shaw. I am hoping to go to Bude next year. It would be great to see The Hot Five representing Canada there too.
Auriel
That wasn’t Bent Persson’s music stand, it was mine! My son lives in Brooklyn and , like Louis, has a Boston Terrier. It is a little bugger, it destroys anything in 10 minutes flat!
So sorry to have denied you (your son, your dangerous dog) proper credit! Thanks for all that fine bass playing at Whitley Bay . . . from an ex-Wheaten Terrier man as well as jazz fan. Cheers, Michael
