Here’s a lovely mournful performance from Harry Allen, tenor sax; Randy Sandke, trumpet; Dan Block, reeds; Rossano Sportiello, piano; Frank Tate, string bass; Bill Ransom, drums. Recorded on Sept. 16, 2011, at Jazz at Chautauqua . . .and that’s Porter’s sorrowful EV’RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE:
Although this performance begins with airport jokes, it soon settles into a mood of deep, hymnlike seriousness. And I dedicate this video to the memory of William McBrien, the esteemed biographer of Porter (and of poet Stevie Smith), one of my professors a long time ago — a great, witty, generous man.
If ever a song was played with such feeling, it has to be this one. I have listened to it twice, so far, and both times it was an emotional experience…Beautiful…Thank you NM
