His Majesty, Sidney Catlett.
Postscript. My pal, the jazz and popular music scholar David J. Weiner, thought the picture could be made to look just like new — and I like his generous efforts very much. Sidney shines through, no matter what the color scheme:
May your happiness increase!
Big Sid did his final gig with Bob at George Wein’s Storyville-Boston…He used to sing ‘Sometimes I’m Happy’ his big feature, every night!
Brother M., I agree. He was THE KING!!!

Certainly my favourite of all jazz drummers, bar none. Such an untimely, early loss (at age 41 in 1951) but what a recorded legacy he left us! If I had to choose one of these, it would be his solo on “Steak Face” from the 1947 Boston Symphony Hall concert, let alone his masterful accompaniment throughout the entirety of the evening. Great photo!
