Three eloquent yet casual musicians — Tal, string bass; Mark, piano; Dan, clarinet and tenor — at work and play in the pleasing surroundings of 88 Orchard Street, on the lower East Side of New York City, captured by my camera last Sunday, October 26, 2014.
A sure cure for the gloomies, for world-weariness.
Here are four beauties from the first set. There will be more, I promise you.
BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA:
DON’T BE THAT WAY:
PRISONER OF LOVE:
SECOND BALCONY JUMP:
This is living synergy, a translucent acoustic orchestra. Such music blesses us.
May your happiness increase!
thank you. and-be that way!
This group swings out madly.Dan Block continues to impress me. Is he based in the apple,he certainly deserves wider recognition. Hes a ballad player supreme.SECONDBALCONY JUMP, memories of Dexter Gordon flood my brain. He’d play 20 choruses of this tune without repeating himself,As for the background noise-I know it’s a restaurant,at least a smattering of applause came through muffled, but appreciated. Oh well, it was ever thus. Thanks for the production and posting.
Zoot, Dan Block comes from St. Louis but has been a reliable and inspiring part of the NYC scene for a good long time. He can impress on clarinet, bass clarinet, alto, tenor, trumpet, vocal, and possibly other instruments I haven’t thought of. An intriguing composer and a hip arranger, with several extraordinary CDs to his credit as well. One of my heroes!
I agree. These are three great, eloquent, musicians. Mark Shane is one of the most top notch piano players I’ve ever heard. My favorite! My hat’s off to Dan Block and Tal Ronen. Also eloquent musicians,,,Oh how I envy you, NM. Thank you so much for the post.
As Danny’s cousin, I can attest to his excellent genes! He comes from a family rich in musical and artistic talent (which somehow, alas, skipped over me!). It’s a joy to listen to him and the rest of this wonderful group!
