“A BAG OF JIVE HE HAD ON HIS BACK”: CHRISTMAS EVE by BABS GONZALES

Babs Gonzales, between 1946-8. Photograph by William P. Gottlieb.

Dig this crazy Christmas Eve scene!

That side was recorded in 1954 or 1955; Teddy Brannon played organ.  I saw this disc in a remarkably odd store — vases, postcards, jewelry, books, and other objects — a few years ago for $3 plus tax and decided that it would be my antique antidote to Andy Williams singing of Christmas.  Looking at Babs’ discography, I see that his Santa never died, and was resurrected as a rock ‘n’ roll Santa, a hippie Santa, and perhaps other manifestations.  A bag full of jive, indeed.

May your happiness increase!
