
This Town Hall concert was produced by Bob Maltz as a tribute to Baby Dodds, Eddie Edwards, and Tony Parenti. I don’t know how a recording of it was made (presumably on disc) but a copy came to me thanks to the late John L. Fell almost thirty-five years ago. (Two tracks have been issued on a CD included with their Tony Parenti book.) It’s time to share the music with people who might never have heard it otherwise: a cross-section of the jazz riches that were at hand in 1946, with veterans of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band still active.

I never heard that blues before. You are making me think I need to go through my collection of acetates to see what other rarities I have. The Blues on this – esp Sidney DeParis, Sandy Williams, the surprise of Harry Carney in this context, Parenti and Bechet both solo and his duet with Monette Moore slays me. It’s almost 2 parts, change it when Sullivan and Sidney comes in.
Music like this hearing was already rare in Chicago in 1981 (we did still have Hodes), this is remarkable – esp Sidney DeParis maybe his greatest after Call Of The Blues and I will presume Baby Dodds on drums.
