I CAN’T BE THERE, BUT YOU SHOULD, IF YOU CAN: HOT TOWN / HOT MUSIC SHOWCASE, Austin, Texas, Saturday, May 25, 2024.

Newton’s Law (Frank, not Isaac) says that I can’t be in Rhode Island and Texas simultaneously. If I were to be even more candid, I would say that some mornings I have trouble being in only one place, but we can draw the curtain on that. A week from now, some of my heroes are gathering for a one-day celebration, from noon to nine o’clock, of soulful energized music. It will happen at the Doris Miller Auditorium. Heroes? How about Colin Hancock, Lauryn Gould, Ryan Gould, Hal Smith, Floyd Domino, Emily Gimble, David Jellema, and our own Apostle of Shellac, Matthew Rivera, spinning authentic 78s.

Here’s more:

Imagine hearing all of your favorite Texas hot jazz, blues, old time, mariachi, and Western swing acts all in one place! Now imagine that place hosted Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Jimmie Lunceford, Andy Kirk, Lionel Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald backed by the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, and Fletcher Henderson to name a few! No, you ain’t dreaming! We are thrilled to announce the lineup of the first “Hot Town: Hot Music Showcase” held on May 25th from noon to 9pm right here at East Austin’s own historic Dorris Miller Auditorium.

Hosted by Austin’s own Joymakers, this amazing lineup includes The Relevators, Hot Club of Cowtown, Floyd Domino, The Shinbone Alley String Band, Mariachi Amor, Aunt Ruby’s Sweet Jazz Babies, Sophia Johnson and Kym Warner, and even our special guest, The Hot Club of New York’s own Matthew “Fat Cat”Rivera all the way from the Big Apple spinning some original Texas jazz 78s. It’s going to be an amazing event and a real homecoming for the local music community! Y’all don’t wanna miss it!

It’s gonna be a long, wonderful day, so we encourage y’all to bring your own picnic!

As I said, I would be there if physics and metaphysics allowed. But surely someone with an iPhone and notebook will take my place.

You can buy tickets (they’re not expensive, I assure you) here — their website with a ticking clock doing the Texas countdown — or here.

Yes, Virginia, there are joys too large for TikTok. Give yourself the present of live music played by live people. I’ll be there in spirit.

And since it wouldn’t be proper to advertise a hot music showcase without providing free samples — the Trader Joe’s principle applied to music — here are two of the bands that will be playing.

I suggest that you Stampede yourself (politely) to one of the ticket sites, and then to East Austin.

May your happiness increase!
