MULTI-NATIONAL HEATING, SUBTITLES NOT REQUIRED: BALAZS SZALOKY, ALONSO DE LA FUENTE, DAVID OSTWALD (Liszt Institute, New York City, January 12, 2026)

The good old good ones are the same in any language, and they bring joy. Here is a too-brief hot interlude that happened just over a week ago on the East Side of Manhattan at the Hungarian Consulate, their Liszt Institute.

You can tell by the songs performed that we were in a timeless land located somewhere north of New Orleans but without boundaries. SOME OF THESE DAYS / SOMEDAY YOU’LL BE SORRY / I FOUND A NEW BABY / ‘DEED I DO* / I CAN’T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE / STRUTTIN’ WITH SOME BARBECUE / AT SUNDOWN* / COTTON TAIL / BLUES MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME //

The cheerful creators are Balazs Szaloky, trumpet; Alonso de la Fuente, guitar, vocal*; David Ostwald, tuba. And we bless them for this forty-five minute magic carpet of escape from the quotidian! I apologize to any multi-national readers for the absence of proper accents: invite me and the OAO to Budapest where we can do proper penance.

Here’s the unashamedly happy music.

And two impromptu photographic studies, thanks to Mlle. I. Phone. One has the trio posed against the wall (and the Institute’s banner) in a manner more appropriate to a detective show on television, but their smiles show that they are innocent with the best legal representation, the firm of Armstrong, Waller, Condon, and Lang, Esq.

And here Mlle. Phone caught Balasz, suitably ornamented, in what she imagines is a Louis-reverie:

What good sounds! Thank you, gentlemen of the ensemble, and thank you to the Liszt Institute for making this joy possible and accessible to all.

May your happiness increase!
